mmm thats a tough one as wonderful as they are it’s hard to say if they would make a good first bird. As nice as quakers can be and the fact they can learn to talk if they choose to learn, they can also be a bit onery, a bit dominant in personality and quakers are notorious known for being cage territorial which means they don’t really like you messing with their cage weather is’t cleaning or changing out toys, so you have to put them someplace away from the cage till you get done with it..I think they can be a bit of a handful for someone who has never had a bird before..
Technically I don’t think there are any good first birds as all birds are alot of work and considered high matinence and if your not prepared for the time and committment they require no bird is a good first bird
I’m just bonding with my first bird, a quaker parrot. After a lot of research, I was confident that a quaker was the right choice and I certainly am not disappointed. It was my choice to get a bird that was not as socialized as some hand fed birds are because I have plenty of time and lots of patience. It’s very rewarding to have gained his trust, and I was glad to get a parrot that may have had a hard time finding a nice one bird home. Consider what you want and what you are willing to give. A quaker is definately a lot of bird for your buck and a big bird personality in a little bird package. It is an investment of both time and money, a consistant commitment that isn’t really cheap. A quaker requires as much if not more time than a dog or cat. My patience is paying off and I am very happy with choice of a quaker parrot as a first bird. Be fair to yourself and your potential new friend. Do consider that birds can live a long time and be willing to commit to a lifetime before you make your decision. Then get to know the quaker parrot breeders in your area.Good Luck! I am amazed at how much I already love my “little green chicken”!
